Numerous studies have shown that maintaining physical fitness, provided the exercise is done in a sensible way, can have the benefit of a longer life. It appears that, especially between the ages of 50 and 70, keeping fit can reduce mortality.
Physical exercise keeps us fit and prolongs life
It is clear, then, that maintaining a healthy lifestyle, through sport and proper weight control, can prolong life. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, by keeping fit we can greatly reduce cardiovascular disease. Why? Because by exercising we can control our blood pressure and cholesterol, two factors that we need to take care of if we want to avoid heart attacks or strokes.
Secondly, a logical question: a person who is adequately nourished and with proper weight control has many more body reserves (both respiratory and cardiac) to call on when he or she falls ill. In other words, their heart and lungs will be better prepared to adapt to the changes the disease causes in the body. Therefore, you will have a better chance of survival in the event of, for example, pneumonia or an acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
Main benefits of keeping fit
1️⃣ Sport helps to improve fitness and endurance.
2️⃣ It helps, as we said, to regulate blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels. In other words, sport improves our cardiovascular health.
3️⃣ Sport contributes to weight loss. And it is not just a question of aesthetics, as maintaining proper body weight control helps to reduce the incidence of many pathologies and to reduce surgical and anaesthetic risk. Overweight or obese patients are in some cases real challenges for anaesthesiologists as they are patients with difficult airway or who present, for example, difficulties in cannulating a venous line or performing a spinal or epidural puncture. The anaesthesia of an obese person is not the same as that of a normal-weight person.
4️⃣ It improves our flexibility. It makes us more flexible, lighter, more agile. Sport helps us to improve our range of movement. All this will help us to prevent injuries
5️⃣ It helps strengthen muscles, ligaments and joints
6️⃣ It helps maintain adequate bone density. By exercising consistently, we will obtain dense and strong bones, thus preventing osteoporosis.
7️⃣ Strengthens the immune system.
8️⃣ It helps reduce our stress levels and improves sleep quality. Exercise improves mood and allows us to release stress improving many pathologies such as depression and anxiety. Sport improves our self-esteem and has multiple benefits for mental health.
