Christmas is approaching and with it the dreaded question we all ask ourselves: what to give this year, books are always a good idea but the bookshops are full of novels of different genres, novelties, classics and, of course, one gets lost. Because, in addition, each reader tends to have his or her own tastes and preferences. We recommend ten novels (and a few more) that are sure to be the right gift for Christmas. Or, at least, that is our intention.
Books are the perfect Christmas gift
Books for lovers of classics
Giving a classic as a gift is almost always a good idea if the person to whom it is addressed is a great lover of literature. In this case, getting a new edition of a novel can be a hit. And here the list is endless. To give some recommendations: Minalima has just illustrated a beautiful edition of Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass (Folioscopio publishing house). A beautiful hardback edition, illustrated with great detail and care that anyone would want to add to their library. Success is guaranteed.

La RAE and ASALE commemorative edition of One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez, published by Alfaguara in 2007, is another jewel that no literature lover will be able to resist. A splendid commemorative edition of a masterpiece of 20th century literature. It is also the last version to be revised and corrected by the author and is accompanied by splendid texts by authors of the stature of Mario Vargas Llosa, Álvaro Mutis, Carlos Fuentes and Víctor García de la Concha, among others.

And we continue with the commemorative editions. Now it is the turn of the classic Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, one of the most widely read classics in literature. But we are going to really sweeten it with the annotated edition published by Akal and with the introduction and notes by John Matteson, which provides an insight into the cultural reality of the time in which the author lived. This luxurious full-colour edition offers more than 220 illustrations and more than 600 notes. A gift that, in addition, exudes elegance with a beautiful presentation and attention to detail.

We finish with the classics with a beautiful edition of Fyodor Dostoyevsky Crime and Punishment, published in 2020 by Alma Europa. One of the greatest works of universal narrative. Admired by generations of readers and authors, Crime and Punishment is an essential work in any reader’s library.

For lovers of the crime/noir book genre
The crime novel is one of the genres that most attracts readers. Perhaps because most of the novels are written at a fast pace, there is something for everyone and almost all of them keep the reader gripped until the end.
The trilogy by the New Yorker Don Winslow, consisting of The Power of the Dog, The Cartel and The Border deals quite crudely with the world of drugs, the border between the USA and Mexico and the relations between the bosses of the drug trafficking empire and the DEA agents. Fast-paced and a true family saga in an incredibly violent and corrupt world that spans from the 1970s to almost the present day. An absolutely addictive read in which, moreover, some critics see a historical value.
The Power of the Dog, The Cartel and The Frontier
Another safe bet is Jo Nesbo The Snowman. This book is part of the saga featuring Norwegian policeman Harry Hole. A bestseller with millions of readers all over the world. There must be a reason for this. But those who refuse to read it because they have seen the film adaptation will be making a serious mistake. The film completely destroys the story written by Jo Nesbo. And if you don’t believe me, compare.
And to end this genre, it is almost impossible not to recommend Pierre Lemaitre tetralogy VERHOEVEN. Finally, in a single volume, the entire saga of Commander Camille Verhoeven (Irène, Alex, Rosy & John y Camille). Simply brutal. You haven’t read a true crime novel if you haven’t read Lemaitre. Truly, absolutely recommended for lovers of this genre.
For novelty lovers: the most popular books for Christmas
Because, let’s be honest, a novelty is almost always a success. If a book is among the top ten bestsellers, there’s a reason for it, or so people think. And in many cases, yes, it can be a success.
The planet prize is a safe bet. Carmen Mola, La bestia is the book that has managed to take the prize. La bestia is an intriguing novel set in Madrid in 1834 and full of history and violence with a frenetic and relentless pace. A more than competent thriller full of historical overtones.
De ninguna parte, Julia Navarro book is another more than interesting option. An absolutely recommendable story about human nature and its chiaroscuros. A vibrant and thought-provoking story.
